Oh, what the hell, Livejournal? What kind of inane, misogynist question is this? Were you wistfully wondering why there wasn't enough eugenicist talk lately? Did you think that women needed to be reminded that our bodies are never considered to actually belong to us? Did you just feel that it was a good time to have a rip roaring classist, misogynist, ableist party?

You're not even trying. Just throwing out questions wrapped in fake edginess and inviting your readers to show the worst of themselves to the world.

Seriously, stick to the fluffy questions. Don't bring anyone's human rights under debate. It's sickening.

Oh God, Tumblr. I have such a love-hate relationship with that site. There's a lot of -ist bullshit that I cannot stand, but at the same time, I get to be nerdy wrt my fandoms and learn about some political/anti-oppression stuff. There are some good anti-oppression/educational blogs out there, but there's just as much crap, too. Bleh.

So really, it's a lot like livejournal crossed with a game of telephone.

[identity profile] fruhlings.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But people need to express their opinions~! FREE SPEECH! DON'T OPPRESS MY RIGHT TO BE OBNOXIOUSLY OFFENSIVE!

Ugh.

But but I don't care if people express their opinions, I just don't want LJ to feature them!

Man, I'm just glad I haven't had any trolls so far.

Now watch what happens while I'm asleep.

[identity profile] fruhlings.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, lolol. That's the perfect way to describe it. It can get very gossipy very quickly, sort of like sf_d and ontd. ALSO HIPSTERS NEED TO STOP POSTING GROSS AND BLOODY PHOTOS. Do not want at 9 o'clock in the morning.

But like I said, I've learned stuff from it. The Genderqueer tumblr is great, and there are some good political commentator-types on there.

And I like your tumblr as well, because you reblog/post good stuff. :)

[identity profile] fruhlings.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW RIGHT? LJ is so creepy sometimes. :|

Yeah, I don't pay nearly enough attention to tumblr and most of the reblogs I do I get from my twitter feed. Some days though I really get into it.

Also, I think that [livejournal.com profile] flumes is responsible for fully half of what comes through my feed. :D

[identity profile] lisaquestions.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
My tumblr feed that is.

[identity profile] wildeabandon.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The question appeared a couple of times on my f'list, and the discussion there was all in the context of whether IVF should be provided on the NHS, which I think is a reasonable question that doesn't have an immediately obvious answer.

[identity profile] stephocalypse.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Lemme guess, lotta "childfree" responses on the main page there?

[identity profile] fruhlings.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I love her! She is so smart and cool. :D Besides her political comments and posts, I like her fashion posts--it makes me wish I knew more about the subject. Everything she posts is pretty. *__*

I also like squintyoureyes on Tumblr. She posts a lot of Merlin-related stuff (hello, my main fandom :3), but she also writes and reblogs some good meta about fandom in general.

[identity profile] gender-euphoric.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
could you maybe...walk me through tumblr a little bit? just a few sentences? i started one the other day and i follow lisa...how exactly do i find other people to follow? do you have any recommendations?
i really like the threaded comments here on livejournal (or dreamwidth) but it's basically a dinosaur at this point.
i want to go where the cool kids are. heh.

I am terrible slow about my tumbling, but if you get more active people to follow you can see what they have to say and respond to them (like, reblog, quote, etc).
ext_28673: (Default)

[identity profile] lisaquestions.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably. I saw people advocate eugenics which set me off.

[identity profile] fruhlings.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you understand how to follow people? Clicking the button at the top that says "follow"? :)

And if you want to find other people to follow, see what people you already follow reblog, and click on the username of one of the other posters. That will lead you to their tumblr site, where you can read more of their posts. If you like what you see, you can follow them!

For example:

I follow 111 people, not all of which are politically-minded. Some of them post like...hipstery-y stuff (triangles and shit, idgi), some post fandom stuff, like tv show screencaps, and some are what I call "fan tumblrs", which are like...tumblrs devoted to a certain celeb/character/relationship. I run several, because I had no life during the summer (I don't update them nearly as much as I used to, which makes me feel bad). And yes, some are politically-minded/activist-y type blogs.

My favorite activist tumblr was ihatethismess, but I think she deleted hers for some reason. :( She's really well-informed about issues of intersectionality and multiple oppressions.

Oh boy, I think I wrote way too much here. D: I hope you get it?

[identity profile] lisaquestions.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, IA wrt flumes.

Nice. I haven't added many fandom-related tumblrs yet.

[identity profile] stephocalypse.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Just clicked the answers page, 2nd result mentioned a "Breeding License", slowly backed away.

Wow. People LOVE their Orwellian universes when it works out for them, don't they?
ext_28673: (Default)

[identity profile] lisaquestions.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. People say shit like it would never ever be applied to them.

[identity profile] kat-chan.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the first non-Cyrillic post that I saw was heavy on the "there should be means- and intelligence-testing that any prospective parent should have to pass before they are allowed to breed" eugenicist bullshit. That sort of post is the type that makes me want to reply with "you'd better thank whatever god you believe in that your parents weren't subject to such rules because, nature or nurture, somehow, somewhere, you were failed."
ext_28673: (Default)

[identity profile] lisaquestions.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. Like, I think most people who advocate for this shit probably don't realize how unlikely it is they'd exist if it worked that way.

[identity profile] kat-chan.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because they all think that they are the brightest, specialist snowflakes of all and that they'd never be on the bad side of a eugenicist panel's decisions. Is that eugenicist position more or less what Huxley was arguing against in "Brave New World"?

(Anonymous) 2010-11-21 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. Why is this question mysogynist? I can see why any particular answer would be, but the question itself is worded pretty neutral, IMO.

(even though the whole point that it's even in question is terrible.)
ext_28673: (Default)

[identity profile] lisaquestions.livejournal.com 2010-11-21 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Because controlling whether some people are allowed to have children primarily affects women. Many many many women were sterilized against their will on the basis of this kind of question - women of color and women with disabilities especially. In practical, historical terms, men were much less likely to be sterilized "for their own good."
